Choosing the Right Birdhouse

Placing a birdhouse in your yard is a great way to enjoy the beauty of birds, and you can also observe their habits and lifestyles once they've made a home of your home. Before you purchase your birdhouse, though, there are a few things to look for to ensure the birds will come and that they'll be comfortable once they do.

Finding an attractive birdhouse can really at a nice touch to the look of your yard, but it's also important to make sure it has certain features. One of the most important features a house can have is ventilation holes on the top and drainage holes on the bottom.

Also, it's good to keep your birdhouse clean, so you may want to look for one with a "clean-out." This is simply a flap or door somewhere on the house that enables you to clean the house conveniently. You'll want to remove old nesting materials each winter.

You'll want to get a house that will last as well, especially since it will be home to birds depending on it. If it is made out of wood, look for cedar, oak, or cypress houses since these are some of the most durable woods. Plastic houses are also great choices since they stand up to weather well. Whatever material you decide on, look it over and make sure it looks thick and durable.

If you start out with the right house, you should have a lovely haven for birds for years to come.
